Julia Bustos-Vasquez

Julia Bustos-Vasquez comes from a lineage of musicians, artisans and creatives. Beginning in her mother’s workshop, as a teenager Julia explored basic jewellery techniques including sawing, piercing, soldering, emerizing, and stone setting.

After a series of private courses in North and South america, In 2020 Julia took the leap into professional jewellery making, completing a Professional Jewellers Diploma at the École des Metiers du Sud Ouest de Montréal, along with a professional Lapidary diploma at the École de Joaillerie à Montréal.

Julia’s artistic practice combines jewellery techniques with sculptural elements to convey social, cultural and political messaging. Heavily research based, as a first generation Canadian of Central and South american origin, Julia’s pieces seek to create a dialogue on LatinX issues such as diaspora, ethnicity and resistance. Julia hand assembles the majority of her pieces, uses organic materials and hand carves stones to allow her full control over her discourse.

A multifaceted artist, Julia is also a professionally trained violinists, and an avid textile enthusiast.
